Managed aquifer recharge (MAR)

Efficiency, modelling, analytical solutions, groundwater mound, economic feasability mapping, circular economy framework

Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is a set of techniques designed to intentionally enhance groundwater replenishment by directing surface water, stormwater or treated wastewater into aquifers. It offers an important means of improving water availability, mitigating the impacts of drought, and supporting sustainable groundwater management, particularly in water-stressed regions.

My research on MAR combines field investigations, analytical modelling and economic assessment, addressing different aspects of artificial groundwater replenishment:

  • Percolation tanks in India: Investigation of the efficiency and hydrological functioning of percolation tanks as a traditional and widespread method of enhancing groundwater recharge in hard-rock aquifers.
  • Groundwater recharge in Morocco: Studies of managed recharge strategies and their potential to improve groundwater resources in semi-arid environments.
  • Analytical modelling: Development of analytical solutions to describe aquifer recharge processes and compute the groundwater mound
  • Economic mapping of MAR potential: Assessment and spatial mapping of the economic feasibility of managed aquifer recharge
  • MAR and the circular economy: Research exploring the integration of managed aquifer recharge into circular economy approaches, highlighting opportunities for sustainable water-resource management and water reuse.

Together, these studies explore MAR from complementary perspectives, linking hydrogeological processes, field-scale applications, modelling and economic feasibility to support more sustainable groundwater management.
